Ministers concentrating on Spanish tourist trade
Friday 06 June 2008
A government official has announced plans to boost the automotive and tourism sectors in Spain to help support the economy.
Miguel Sebastian, industry minister, was speaking at a conference organized by the Nueva Economia foru.
The minister unveiled that the government had today (June 6th) agreed a loan with a state financing agency, Instituto de Credito Oficial, to encourage Spaniards to upgrade their old cars for newer, "greener" models.
The tourism sector accounted for 11 per cent of the GDP in 2007, Mr Sebastian said. Forbes reported that the minister spoke of plans for Spain to adapt to a changing environment.
Mr Sebastian said: "We need to make tourism less seasonal", and announced proposals to offer visitors long-term winter break packages.
According to the World Bank, Spain has the eighth largest economy in the world and the fifth largest in Europe.
Last year, the Spanish economy grew 3.8% outpacing all G7 members and all the big EU economies for the 3rd consecutive year.
