Las Vegas water company offers cash incentive to homeowners
Thursday 19 June 2008
Property investors that are looking for cash incentives could consider Las Vegas, as the local water authority is currently running a "Cash for Grass" programme.
The Las Vegas Sun has reported that nearly 5,400 homeowners have already replaced their lawns with desert landscaping as part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority's scheme.
A new high offer of $2 (£1.02) per square foot for the first 1,500 feet of grass convinced many residents to take part.
Some businesses have been attracted by the programme as they have seen a profit to be made not only from the cash incentive, but also the water bill savings, as there is no longer any need to use sprinklers for lawns.
Erik Proksch, landscaping superintendent for Camden Oasis, told the Las Vegas Sun that signing up to the scheme had "saved the company $200,000 (£101,500) on its water bills so far".
New property investors could also profit from the scheme and would be able to enjoy the convenience of low-maintenance outside spaces.
