Index finds Portugal peaceful
Friday 30 May 2008
Portugal has been ranked among the most peaceful nations in the world, according to a report released last week.
The Global Peace Index is an annual report published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and has awarded Portugal 7th place.
First issued last year, the EIU has concluded that the world is now "slightly more peaceful".
Steve Killelea, Australian philanthropist and creator of the Global Peace Index, said: "It is encouraging but we need smaller, individually-taken steps for each country, so the world can progress on the road to peace."
Free from civil unrest since the mid 1980's and experiencing very low levels of violent crime, Portugal beat 132 countries to win seventh place in the index.
Enjoying good relations with its neighbours, Portugal spends a minimal amount on weapons compared to its Nordic counterparts.
Portugal is a founding member of NATO and in 1996 co-founded the Community of Portuguese Language Countries.
