Caribbean protects wildlife and tourism trade

Wednesday 28 May 2008

The Caribbean has agreed to create new marine parks to protect the environment and native marine habitat and to help safeguard its tourism trade.

The US based Nature Conservancy is working in conjunction with Caribbean governments to help advise them on the best way to preserve their natural environment.

Rob Weary of the Nature Conservancy said: "In many Caribbean nations at least 50 per cent of gross domestic product is derived from tourism. Countries are realising the need to invest in protected areas so tourism can remain the economic engine."

Nine Caribbean nations have signed up to the plan and have agreed to extend protected areas, so that by 2012 ten per cent of marine and costal habitats will be safeguarded.

The Bahamas has a scheme named the "Caribbean Challenge" whose aim is to have 20 per cent of its marine habitats protected by 2020.

According to Reuters, Earl Deveaux, Bahamas minister of works and transport, said the plan was "a trust fund for the future benefit of society". ADNFCR-1590-ID-18612065-ADNFCR
