Wednesday 04 June 2008
An agreement between Cape Verde and the European Union (EU) is set to improve relations with, and movement between, the African archipelago and EU member states.
Cape Verde and the EU are planning to sign the Joint Declaration on a Partnership for Mobility in Luxembourg on Thursday (June 5th) which has been in negotiations since January this year.
Lidel vio Lopes, minister for Internal Administration of Cape Verde, said: "Conditions will be created to boost the relationship with member states of the European Union in specific areas for management of legal migratory flows."
Due to begin in January 2009, the programme aims to create a "circular immigration policy" to help Cape Verdeans who wish to work in EU countries.
Cape Verdeans that work in Europe will also be given freedom to visit their country of habitual residence when they need to under the agreement.
In return, the African republic will pledge to stop illegal immigration from Africa to Europe.
