Canada unplugged
Monday 02 June 2008
A new product for the wireless telecomms market is being launched in Canada and will probably create a new player in the market, industry experts have said.
Rogers Communications will be selling the Apple iPhone and may be required to sell it as a flat-rate, unlimited data plan.
If this happens, it will, according to Lawrence Surtees, vice-president at Toronto-based analyst firm IDC Canada "shake things up in the wireless data market".
Michael Burt, associate director of industrial outlook at Conference Board of Canada (CBOC), said: "I expect to start to see increased competition sometime in the middle of next year".
IDC predicts revenue growth of 2.9 per cent in 2008 and an average annual growth rate of 3.5 per cent over the next five years.
Canada is the world's second largest country by total area, with Russia being the largest. Canada ranks fourth by land area after Russia, China, and the United States.
