Spanish island sees increased tourism in 2008

Friday 29 August 2008

Despite the ongoing global credit crunch, the Spanish island of Lanzarote has seen a large increase in the numbers of visitors from Britain during the first half of the year.

In news that may be of interest to property investors considering purchasing holiday home real estate in the Canary Islands, figures from AENA, the Spanish airport authority, revealed that visits to Lanzarote from the UK increased by 15.6 per cent.

Already popular among British tourists, the island attracted some 509,755 people from the UK between January and June 2008.

Over the same period, the total number of foreign visitors to Lanzarote increased by 4.9 per cent, according to the Canary Island Tourist Board - an indication that there is growing demand for Spanish holiday-rental accommodation in the region.

Meanwhile, a report from Property Wire recently revealed that the high-end property market on mainland Spain is in similarly good health, with strong demand for real estate coming from British, German, Dutch and Russian investors.
