Brazilian tribe discovered

Monday 02 June 2008

A previously undiscovered tribe has been found in an area south west of the Amazon rain forest in Brazil.

The National Foundation of Indians (FUNAI) came across the indigenous group on Friday (May 30th) in the state of Acre.

This discovery takes the number of Indian tribes found living in the Amazon rainforest to 68, 24 of which have been discovered in Acre.

According to FUNAI, the Indians were startled by the arrival of helicopters in the rain forest and aimed bows and arrows at the passing photographers, although no one was hurt in the incident.

FUNAI has estimated that the newly discovered peoples number about 500 and, isolated from modern life, live in huts along the Envira River covered in palm leaves.

Brazil is now ahead of New Guinea as the country with the most uncontacted people.

When the country was discovered by Europeans, modern Brazil had up to 2,000 nations and tribes and was made up of approximately 3,000,000 Native Americans. ADNFCR-1590-ID-18618876-ADNFCR
