Investors interested in purchasing property in places such as the Caribbean will be pleased to hear that the credit-crunch is not affecting the tourism trade.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has said that consumers are not willing to give up their summer holiday which is good news for investors as demand for holiday homes will be high.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA, said: "Bookings for this summer have been very healthy. It is fairly clear that 30 years ago a foreign holiday was regarded as luxury. It is now seen by the vast majority of our customers as a necessity."

According to Mr Tipton, foreign holidays are seen as important and his views are supported by the latest statistics from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

UNWTO figures show that international tourism grew at around five per cent during the first four months of the year, which was one percentage point above the long-term trend.

Central Bank statistics have shown a significant, six per cent increase in tourists to the Caribbean since 2007 with 1.6 million visitors recorded in the first four months of 2008.
