Spain is not only the European country that offers the best standard of living according to a new survey by Uswitch, it is also eco-aware as it is set to unveil an energy initiative that aims to cut the country's energy use by ten per cent.

"Plan Save" is part of a plan designed to reduce the country's dependence on imported energy and soaring world prices which is good news for those considering investing in property there.

Industry Minister Miguel Sebastian said: "This is going to affect the housing, retail, transport and energy sectors" Reuters reported.

Reuters stated that five billion euros are expected to be saved through the programme.

Uswitch commented that at the moment gas bills in Spain are already "substantially below the European average and are the second lowest in Europe", which is great news for those with Spanish properties.

During the Europa Press briefing, Sebastian also said that the government was planning to invest 1 billion euros between 2009 and 2010 to reform Spain's tourism infrastructure.
